Synopsis:
Climate change presents growing challenges for tourist destinations, requiring innovative territorial planning strategies that integrate resilience, adaptation and mitigation. This round table therefore brings together experts to discuss interdisciplinary approaches that promote the sustainability and competitiveness of destinations, balancing economic development, environmental conservation and the well-being of local communities.
The discussion will centre on concrete examples of good practice and implementation strategies, with an analysis focused on multi-actor governance, the role of citizen science in building adaptive solutions and incorporating climate risk assessment models into tourism planning. International and national case studies will be discussed, exploring how public policies, resilient infrastructures, and how emerging technologies can promote tourist destinations better prepared for extreme weather events, changes in water availability, and impacts on biodiversity.

This roundtable will bring together key stakeholders to discuss the long-term vision for rural Europe, aligning with the EU’s strategy for sustainable and resilient rural areas. The discussion will explore the main challenges and opportunities faced by rural regions, focusing on governance, economic diversification, demographic shifts, and digital and green transitions. The session aims to foster dialogue between policymakers, researchers, and civil society representatives, ensuring that rural communities are empowered to shape their own future. The debate will incorporate recent developments in EU rural policies, particularly the EU Long-Term Vision for Rural Areas and the Rural Pact, providing a critical space to assess how these new policy directions can shape the future of rural Europe.
Speakers (to be confirmed):
Isabel Estrada Carvalhais - Former Member of the European Parliament and Rapporteur for the EU’s Long-Term Vision for Rural Areas. Professor at the University of Minho (UMinho), with expertise in rural development, European policies, and governance.
João Leitão – President of the Portuguese Association for Regional Development (APDR) and professor at the University of Beira Interior (UBI). His research focuses on regional development, entrepreneurship, and innovation policies.
Serafín Pazos Vidal – Expert in European territorial cooperation and governance, representing the European Association for Information on Local Development (AEIDL). He has extensive experience in EU rural and regional policy advocacy.
João Almeida (Moderator) – Founder and Coordinator of Rural Move, a non-profit organisation fostering sustainable rural communities through innovation and stakeholder engagement. PhD Candidate at the University of Aveiro.
