Born in Braga in 1961, he’s married and father of 2 children. He holds a degree in Production Engineering (1984) and a PhD in Polymer Science and Engineering (1991). Is Full Professor at the University of Minho, since 2003.
President of the School of Engineering (2005-09), Rector of the University of Minho (2009-17), President of the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities (2014-17), Patronage of the CEER Foundation of the Universities of Northern Portugal and Galicia (2010-16); He has been a curator of the A3ES Foundation since 2021, and a member of the Governing Board of the MIT-Portugal Program.
He was President of CoLab in Digital Transformation, DTx (2018-20) and Director of CEIIA - Center for Engineering and Development (2005-09 and 2018-20) and PIEP - Innovation in Polymer Engineering (2001-09).
He has been President of the Coordination Commission for the Northern Region since 2020, and chaired the Galicia – Northern Portugal Working Community (2020-24)
Is member of the Academy of Engineering, 2010.
He has been awarded by several institutions: Gold Badge of the University of Santiago de Compostela, 2013; Honorary citizen and medal of honor of the Municipality of Guimarães, 2016; Scientific Merit Medal from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, 2017; Gold Medal of the City of Braga, 2018; Grand Cross of the Order of Public Instruction, 2018; Medal of the Galician Parliament 2023 (as president of the AECT Galicia – Northern Portugal). Finally, he is an honorary citizen of the municipalities of Mogadouro and Vila Nova de Gaia, 2024.
